The horrific true story of serial kidnapper, rapist, and killer Robert Hansen’s reign of terror As oil-boom money poured into Anchorage, Alaska the city quickly became a prime destination for the seedier elements of society: prostitutes, pimps, con men, and criminals of all breeds looking to cash in. However, something even worse lurked in their midst.   To all who knew him, Robert Hansen was a typical hardworking businessman, husband, and father. But hidden beneath the veneer of mild respectability was a monster whose depraved appetites could not be sated. From 1971 to 1983, Hansen was a human predator, stalking women on the edges of Anchorage society—women whose disappearances would cause scant outcry, but whose gruesome fates would shock the nation. After his arrest, Hansen confessed to seventeen brutal murders, though authorities suspect there were more than thirty victims.   Alaska State Trooper Walter Gilmour and writer Leland E. Hale tell the story of Hansen’s twisted depredations—from the dark urges that drove his madness to the women who died at his hand and finally to the authorities who captured and convicted the killer who came to be known as the “Butcher Baker.”

About three years ago, I read the book "Fair Game" (FG) about Robert Hansen, and then not long afterwards watched the film "The Frozen Ground" (TFG) with Nicholas Cage and John Cusack. On my first attempts I liked the book but didn't much like the film, as I thought that TFG spent too much time in "gentlemen's clubs," a complaint that you probably won't read very often from too many guys.During that first viewing, I just thought that the psyche of Mr. Hansen wasn't explored enough in the film. Time spent in those clubs took away from time that could've been used to explore why he became what he was and his psychopathic journey to get there. But then I read "Butcher, Baker" (BB) -- a very strong read by the way -- and then decided to purchase and watch TFG again. During that second viewing, I understood more what the screenwriter was trying to do, at least if you read BB. And I recommend that you do.And I also recommend reading FG as well. FG seemed to deal more with the background stories of the victims; where they came from and how they arrived in Alaska in the first place. There is a "talent agency" in Seattle, in particular, where most of the gals who became victims were "recruited." I won't say what the name of that agency is, but you can easily find it doing web searches. And there was a guy who I believed used to own the agency and various strip clubs in Seattle, at least before he died, and it was interesting finding out how he unwittingly served up victims to Mr. Hansen. On the other hand, BB deals more with Mr. Hansen and his crimes, but it spends the most of its time outlining the steps that Detective Glen Flothe spent chasing and catching Mr. Hansen. After reading, it seems that the word "no" doesn't exist in Mr. Flothe's vocabulary, unless maybe it was about whether or not he wanted to see more killings in Alaska. Mr. Flothe was relentless in his pursuit of Mr. Hansen, even if it really jeopardized the detective's career. While Mr. Hansen is now dead -- I'll bet there weren't too many tears the day he died -- I believe that Mr. Flothe is now retired. Let's just say each really deserved his retirement. You'll also find out quite a bit about the one living victim who helped bring Mr. Hansen down -- I've seen her called by several names and I'm not sure which one is real at this point -- and that's very interesting. She wanted to testify, she didn't want to testify. I can't say I blame her. She definitely was putting her life on the line if she did. But I guess she's been married now for quite a few years and has several children. I guess something good can come out of something evil.I recommend reading "Butcher, Baker," but I also recommend reading "Fair Game," as each gives a slightly different view of the same case. And while "The Frozen Ground" probably spends too much time in "gentlemen's clubs" and isn't exactly accurate, it's definitely worth a peek when you know more about this incredible story.
